MSDS FAQ

toxic material msds required

What is an MSDS?

MSDS is the acronym for Material Safety Data Sheet. In manufacturing or processing where chemicals are used, customers purchasing products are entitled to know safety and non-safety features of chemicals used in products.

In the U.S., these are mandatory for products that have potential to cause illness or injury to humans, animals or the environment.

MSDS Origins

In most companies that produce products using raw or synthetic materials, an MSDS originates from the "recipe" used to create the product. For example, in water flocculants, an MSDS is created after a mass balance sheet and certificate of analysis are provided by R&D and QA/QC departments who create and test all products for safety and effectiveness of use.

Next, data contained in these documents are transferred to a standard MSDS form under OSHA Regulation 3514 which outlines mandatory information that must be contained in the MSDS.

The format of an MSDS begins with information on properties in a specific product. For example, an MSDS for ingredients used to make paints would contain names of raw materials used to manufacture particular types of paints.

The MSDS would also include any hazardous properties such as flammability, absorption in human skin or through inhalation and corrosive properties.

The actual format of the MSDS includes:

Section I - Identification of the product and company name creating it

  • Basic product use
  • Emergency telephone number and emergency contact name
  • Chemical name, class and synonym(s)
  • Product creation date
  • MSDS author

Section II

  • Composition and Product Ingredients
  • Chemical identification and CAS number (Chemical Abstract Service)
  • Ingredient data such as chemical concentration, volume and weights

Limits of exposure

Section III

  • Hazard Identification
  • Potential path of exposure
  • Hazard to human organs
  • Exposure severity

Signs and symptoms of exposure

There are additional sections to MSDS sheets that further define chemical properties, reactivity and chemical stability, toxicological and ecological data, proper disposal and transportation to disposal site and regulatory compliance information.

How to Read an MSDS Sheet
It's important to note that some products contain more than one chemical. In this case, more than one MSDS is issued for each chemical component. MSDS are written in clear, easy to understand terminology.

How to Get an MSDS
Whenever you purchase a product, even simple household cleaning products, you have the right to request MSDS sheets from the manufacturer of the product. These are provided upon request. In some cases, an MSDS may accompany the product when it is packaged.

3 Benefits Of Hiring A Business Coach

3 ball
A business coach just like in sports is a trainer; he is there to help the persons running a business with skills and traits that will help in human resource development. A business coach is there to help a firm manager on an individual focus develop the required attributes in running their firms for success. Self-attribute that will be a development strategy to gaining proficiency in the business. Business coaches are there to monitor performance, deal with conflict, and enhance trait management at a professional level in addition to initiating personal changes desirable for the business. Support, accountability, and encouragement are their major role. Business coaches are important in the businesses due to;

They are a consistent support
Unlike most of the times where we forget about ourselves and concentrating on helping other people, business men are there to bring back the focus on you. This includes like being in good health for better performance in the business or in the maximization of time spent at work. For an hour session in with a business coach, one is likely to identify positive progress in their professional attributes and also how they handle the employees or clients. Constant support from business coaches enhances positive change and courage in the handling of negotiations.

Business coaches are an added source of knowledge

Business coaches have knowledge and information in business as their art. They know all the ups and downs in a business and sharing the business problems with them is like solving them. They cannot be compared to sharing the business with some couple of friends who will offer just sympathy. Their inputs as coaches are relevant for the business; they bring out the needed perspective. This will not only solve problems in business but enlighten for future uncertainties.

Business coaches are not there to judge, they mean business

Business coaches will only call at the destined time with an important objective. After sharing with them, they will provide professional opinions about that business idea and will not be there to create judgments. Honesty is what they work with, and they will help you avoid feeling dumb in front of a couple of business partners while sharing ideas. They are all that an entrepreneur needs to boost their businesses to the next level and improve on their entrepreneurship skills and attributes.

I decided to take the Wonderlic Test...here's what happened.

I'm a bit of a football fan and I'm not ashamed to say it. One of the more interesting elements of being a football fan is the NFL Draft. Each year leading up to the draft the top college players hit the NFL combine and run through a battery of tests where they are poked, prodded and measured in every way that NFL scouts find worthwhile. This includes everything from measuring hand size, to vertical jump, to shuttle runs and even to a variety of tests including the Wonderlic Test.

The Wonderlic is one of the better known intelligence tests, but unlike some of its older contemporaries like the IQ test, the Wonderlic can be administered quickly and is thought to be more of a measure of someone's ability to "think on their feet". 50 questions in 12 minutes. For those who score well it's a pat on the back, for those who score poorly, expect a media shaming.

As a college educated person, I wanted to see how I'd do compared to the jocks so I could feel superior or great shame. I signed up at a local administrator and gave it a go. Here was my experience.

  1. Nerves. It's been a long time since I took a test of any kind. Though I had nothing to gain in this experience, it did cost me money and I didn't want to explain to my wife if I was found to be stupid.
  2. The test goes FAST. I mean, unbelievably fast. I was cognizant of the time for the most part, but  I still wasn't able to finish the questions in time. I was on question 46, and though there was no warning I knew I was about out of time so I started randomly filling in answers but left the final two blank.
  3. It's very easy to get caught up on a single question, which is what happened to me. I should have skipped it - it was a math question that I kept second guessing myself on and it ate up 30-45 seconds, and that's a big no-no.
So how'd I do? I ended up with a 41. So, by NFL standards, I'm pretty smart. Though, I guess that's a good score by most any standard. That said, this isn't reason to get big headed, it's a test. I'm good at taking tests and always have been. I imagine there are plenty of people good at processing information and even highly book smart who just wouldn't do well based on the logistics of the Wonderlic.

That said, I've looked around on the web and taken a few of the free online versions, and the only one which I found to be a fairly close approximation was wonderlictestsample.com, so give it a try if you're interested in seeing how you'd do with Wonderlic questions.

The Nursing Shortage

The shortage of registered nurses has been predicted and studied for more than a decade, when the health care industry began preparing for the impact of an aging baby-boomer population. There are several factors that have contributed to the shortage of nurses and many steps being taken to correct it.

The nursing shortage is a result of not only the aging workforce, but also a main contributor was the Affordable Care Act in 2010 that brought millions of Americans into the health insurance system, increasing demand for nurses. Another major reason for the shortage is the retirement rate of RNs,  as 55 percent of the current RN workforce are 50 or older, according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. More than 1 million RNs will reach retirement age withing the next 10 to 15 years.

The shortage has affected nurses and patients alike, with an increased and heavy workload for nurses and less detailed care for patients. According to a report done by the Joint Commission of Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, inadequate nurse staffing has been a factor in 24 percent of the 1,609 cases involving patient death, injury, or permanent loss of function reported since 1997. For nurses, the shortage has meant increased stress levels, longer hours, and job dissatisfaction. On the other hand, as incentive to persuade young people to join the nursing field, higher salaries are being offered, as well as large sign-on bonuses.

In order to minimize the shortage, many colleges are taking steps to expand their nursing programs and to get students more interested in joining the health care industry. Many students have realized that the shortage means easy post graduate employment, prompting them to join the nursing track. Sixty percent of graduates from Sinclair School of Nursing in Missouri had confirmed jobs even before graduation. One organization, Nurses for a Healthier Tomorrow, made up of 40 national nursing and health care organizations are working to address the shortage. The coalition has created a website as well as an advertising campaign and secured media coverage to spread the word about the shortage and to encourage young people to join the field.

The nursing shortage is a long-term problem that requires long-term solutions and mainly the best solution is to get our young people interested in nursing. Campaigns, higher salaries, and an increased awareness of what being a nurse really means are the first steps.

Hasbro and The Autism Project Collaborate to Help Children with Disabilities

For a child with developmental disabilities, playing with certain toys may not come naturally, but Hasbro feels that this is no reason for them not to experience the joy that these toys can bring them. Hasbro Inc. has recently teamed up with The Autism Project to help create resources for children to learn and understand how to use their toys. The series titled Toybox Tools helps to encourage children with disabilities to still play with toys and enjoy playtime. The Autism Project is a group of parents and professionals that create instructional videos and tools for people with autism. The outcome of this partnership will be these same resources but specifically for children and with a focus on enjoying toys and playtime.

Extended Warranties: The Smart Invesment

This is a Guest Posting by: Adam Davies from Warrick Ford

Extended Warranties:  the thing your DIY Dad said you don’t need, the salesman says is essential and you’ve never heard of. So what are they? Do you need one? And what does it do?
To get you started, an extended warranty is a service that you pay for which will cover some to all of your repairs down the line when your car needs fixing. There are usually two schools of thought when it comes to an extended warranty, there’s the side that think they aren’t worth thinking twice about, and then there’s those who wouldn’t buy a car without one. Those in the former group are entitled to their opinion, but in today’s world of holding onto vehicles longer and getting the most out of what you own, an extended warranty is a safe and smart investment.

An extended warranty kicks in after the factory bumper to bumper warranty expires on your vehicle and comes in different tiers of coverage depending on what you want to be covered. Complete packages are obviously pricier than basic coverage but also give you much more peace of mind knowing your whole car is covered, not just a major component. There will always be arguments against extended warranties and while cars have gotten more and more reliable over the years, your best bet is still to get some coverage. Here’s why, as I just mentioned, cars by in large have been getting more reliable in recent years and while that is a great thing, they have also been getting much more advanced in terms of parts, components and how they all work together, which works against you when it comes time to get something fixed.

A mere 10-12 years ago let’s say your side view mirror was clipped and broke off, while still a pain, these mirrors only cost you $20 and an hour in the garage to replace. Now jump to today, in the same situation, not only can a side view mirror be hundreds of dollars, but there may be no way you can replace it by yourself, which means taking it to a garage and paying even more money just to fix your mirror. The truth of the matter is that most of us today don’t have the time or expertise to fix our vehicles ourselves but also don’t want to pay thousands of dollars every time it’s in the shop. An extended warranty can greatly ease this pain we feel in our wallets and get us back on the road safely.
Another important thing to remember is that your extended warranty does NOT need to be purchased the same day you buy your new car, but it may be most negotiable then. Here’s what you do, before buying your vehicle, do your research, call around, get quotes and find out what plan is best for you, go into the dealership knowing what coverage and price you need and want and don’t budge. One caveat to this is that while you can still purchase an extended warranty after your factory coverage runs out, the cost increases dramatically, so it’s best to do it before hand.

In the end the choice is truly up to you, the consumer, and it’s great you’re doing your homework. The best way to think of an extended warranty is just like you would any other “insurance” type of purchase, and many people don’t think about purchasing it, or getting enough coverage until it’s too late. Prices are usually competitive and easy for you to budget for. It’s an investment you’ll be happy you made when the day comes you take your car in for a problem and don’t get stuck paying a few thousand dollars in repairs.

A Brief History Of Magazines

TIME Magazine; Person of the Year, Greg's Art ...
TIME Magazine; Person of the Year, Greg's Art and My Photo Online (Photo credit: Tony Fischer Photography)
Today's post courtesy of our friends at Modern Litho.

It's easy to take magazines for granted. In this day and age you can get a subscription for next to nothing, newstands are full of all of the recognizable names and any number of niche titles that seem to come and go ad infinitum. The word magazine actually was derived from the Arab world, as the word meant "warehouse", and as a magazine was basically a location for depositing a number of pieces of useful information, it stuck. While that's all well and good, where did the magazine come from, and how did it get to the point where it is today?

Germany
The first published magazine ever was titled  Erbauliche Monaths-Unterredungen (translation: Edifying Monthly Discussions). Thematically this publication centered on philosophy and was mainly written by one author. Several similar magazines followed shortly, all following similar lines of one main writer and a limited scope of subject matter, typically targeting an intellectual audience.

France
In 1672 the French Publication Le Mercure Galant was the first magazine that followed a more modern format with a large number of contributors and a variety of themes including theater, litereature and politics. This format was a hit and was copied quickly across Europe. The first publication targeting women was launched in London in 1693 and was titled Ladie's Mercury.

Limitations
Early magazines struggled largely due to the inability to produce enough copies. Moreso than singular books, writing, designing, printing and distributing magazines was an ongoing, laborious, and expensive operation. Most early periodicals were limited to 100,000 copies and were largely geographically limited. Another limitation was the quality of the publications themselves. These weren't the glossy, colorful editions we're used to seeing today. As such, advertising wasn't prominent (along with a tax that existed on advertising up to 1853).

Eventually towards the turn of the century, printing technology and the repealed ad tax started the revolution in magazine advertising that made it a leading form of marketing that it has remained for over a hundred years.

“Son of God” and Similar Movies

We already know the main characters, the ruthless traitors, the sickening torture, and how it all ends, yet Hollywood still keeps on making films about Jesus Christ. But these film producers are sure of one thing—there will always be a loyal following for these movies about the life of Jesus. So what makes Son of God different from the rest of the pack?

Grand Rapids insurance changes from ACA already in motion

Flag of City of Grand Rapids
Flag of City of Grand Rapids (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
Like the rest of Michigan and the United States in general, Grand Rapids residents will be seeing changes to their health insurance plans, and notifications have already come in the mail for many. Upwards of 200,000 people in the state have been or will soon be notified that their health care coverage will need to be replaced by a new plan that meets the requirements of the Affordable Care Act.

For some, this won't be a big change, as their coverage may have a similar substitute available. However, it seems a group that's running into the most problems with this situation are the young, healthy (and non risk-averse) crowd. Via http://medcitynews.com/2013/10/many-michigan-will-lose-cheap-insurance-policies-dont-meet-aca-requirements:

The policies that are ending were often less expensive on the individual market because they provided limited benefits and were sold to healthier consumers.

And that was fine with consumers such as Josh Mulder.

Mulder had landed a plan several years ago that cost his Wixom family offour just $291 a month. That policy will end Dec. 31, according to a letter from his insurer.

The policy didn't cover things such as maternity care or prescription drugs, but, Mulder said, his family is generally healthy and he was willing to take the risk.

"I had a great rate," he said.

Rates that meet the required benefits under health reform average $762.06 a month on the Michigan Health Insurance Marketplace for his family of four, according to a cost estimator by the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services.

Why You Should Purchase A Pool Safety Cover This Fall

Families buy pools to cool off in the summer and have fun in the sun. Unfortunately, every year in the United States the family pool becomes the source of tragedy for many families. Drowning deaths are the number one cause of fatalities for children under five years of age in the United States. Even with earnest supervision, it only takes as little as two inches of water and a few seconds for a small child to drown. With such a slim margin for error, it's vital to take the right precautions to reduce the risk of a child drowning.

The security of a safety cover
A pool safety cover is a tight fitting cover that is attached by secured anchors. These are sturdy and can be purchased for any size of pool. Typically, there are two main types of safety covers, mesh and solid. A mesh cover is made of tightly bound fibers but still allows small particulates and water to flow through it. A solid cover will not allow anything to pass through, but will likely come at a higher expenditure. Learn more about the differences at http://www.swimtownpools.com/pool-safety-covers-s/293.htm.

A properly fitted safety cover can support the weight of a child (though under no circumstances should you test this) should they wander out of sight for a few moments. This line of defense can provide parents with peace of mind once the pool is closed up for the season. Further, beyond your own children, the safety cover also provides that last line of defense against others' children mistakenly wandering into your pool, or even pets.

What else can you do?
Obviously you can't leave a pool safety cover in place 24 hours a day 365 days a year so it's important to take some additional steps to help keep children safe around the pool. Here's a collection of suggestions:
Add a pool fence. When the pool's in season, a secure fence with a child proof latch will ensure that children don't have access to the pool without an adult there for supervision. You can even purchase alarms for the gate as children get older to notify anyone in the household if someone is entering your pool area.

Have safety equipment handy. Accidents do happen, and when they do its best to be prepared. While safety equipment won't make your pool completely safe from drowning incidents, have a safety hook near the pool (and learning how to use it properly) is one more tool to help keep your little swimmers safe.

The most important safety element of all, however is proper supervision. If you hear the tragic stories of parents you'd be surprised how little inattentiveness it took for an accident to happen. Something as seemingly harmless as being distracted by the telephone can offer up enough time for a child to put themselves in a potentially life threatening situation. So avoid potential distractions by leaving them in the house so you can focus on keeping an eye on your child.

There's no one way to fool proof your pool against drowning, but these steps will greatly reduce your risk of it happening. It may take a bit of time and money to add some of these safe guards, but in the long haul what's more valuable than the safety of your family?

The Use of Cloud Services

cloud computing
cloud computing (Photo credit: kei51)
When you need reliable telecom services, using a cloud based solution can provide just that. Many options exist for companies that need these telecommunication services, from basic telephone networks, to advanced system installation. A number of service providers can offer all of these for a very low rate relative to the cashflow of most businesses. Most offer advanced customization options as well for those who need a complex system. This can in the long run save time and money for the businesses that use them for any of the infrastructure it supports.

A number of companies have requirements for infrastructure that supports the close networking of everyone involved in the enterprise. This can be achieved with up-links to core technology systems provided by many cloud based companies. Significant cost savings can be gained by working with services entirely based in the cloud. If you have an existing phone network relying on old technology, you can update it now and receive serious benefits in efficiency and costs. Knowing the right time to upgrade is the key to staying on top of your business.

The network comprising cloud based solutions generally provides a number of options for business owners, from basic cabling of their existing phone systems, to integrated technology based networks that allow the employees in your company to communicate far more effectively. The interface provided with these systems often rival that of many enterprise based in-house versions. Valuable and cost efficient network systems can be directly integrated into most existing locations to provide the needed technology that allows interactive systems to be created.

If you have a dynamic and fluid workflow, these telecom systems can give your company a noticeable increase in overall productivity. Money can be saved by having the right components installed and the long term maintenance costs for these solutions is negligible. You should work with your network service provider to determine a private cloud services plan that is right for you, so your company and the people who work there obtain the benefits this kind of update can provide. Doing this now, and taking the steps toward an increased workflow for your business can end up making a serious difference in your bottom line.

Concrete Slab For My Cabin?

log cabin
log cabin (Photo credit: KurtVon)

So I'm the proud new owner of a log sided cabin up north and I'm thinking about adding a concrete slab in the kitchen. I visited a few sites and filled out some requests for info and the responses were pure prose!

As someone who was apparently writing in a non-native language sent me via email, "
Granite countertops are a very popular destination for today’s kitchens, even if they are heavy. Many people understand the perfect tool for granite in the kitchen, bathroom, or anywhere in your home.
Update the work surface will help you look good kitchen, but what you choose for your countertop? Granite is the obvious choice because of the strength, durable and beautiful, but if you want, granite tile or granite slab for your counter? A granite countertop is easy to clean, no grooves, such as tiles, but tiles usually cost less.
Granite tiles and granite slabs of stone come exactly the same. This seems pretty obvious, but there are people who do not know. The only real problem is looking and finding a granite counter that you like and then thinking of how you want it installed and placed.
How can you not buy that???

What Will Social Security Cover? Sleep Apnea?

Social Security Card
Social Security will evaluate sleep apnea just as they would any other medical and/or mental condition. You may be wondering how Social Security evaluates disabling impairments. Social Security disability is awarded based upon functional limitations rather than specific medical conditions, consequently sleep apnea is considered a medical condition by Social Security.

However, Social Security disability examiners must consider how your sleep apnea limits your functional ability in order to determine the severity of your condition by Social Security disability rules and regulations.

It is most likely (in most cases) that sleep apnea will not be a severe enough condition to warrant an allowance for Social Security disability, although sleep apnea in conjunction with other cardiovascular or pulmonary conditions may result in a Social Security disability allowance.

Just how does Social Security evaluate any medical and/or mental condition? Social Security uses a five step sequential evaluation. This evaluation considers the severity of your conditions, your work history, education, the length of time you have been or expect to be out of work, and your ability to be retrained for a job that is compatible with your limitations. They should also encourage you to find job specific resources on the internet, such as doctor jobs for those with physician experience, and secretary jobs with those of similar experience. Be sure your medical and metal condition is in accordance with what you are looking for.

Buy Popcorn Stuff on Amazon

English: for microwave ovens, popped state.

The original review of the Orville Redenbacher popcorn bowl and microwave popcorn samples and the coupons and the crinkly wrapping made you weak in the knees. It made you wish you had some lovely popcorn to sit and eat out of your very own Orville Redenbacher popcorn bowl.

I felt your jealousy. I felt your popcorn craving…the one that feels like when you’re at work and someone makes popcorn in the microwave and even though you are sitting miles away from the microwave you can smell it and your mouth is watering. Thankfully, we have the internet, and places where you can buy popcorn in bulk. Just buy an Amazon gift card here, and buy all the popcorn making supplies you would need with it, and go to the store and tell them to give you all the popcorn and butter they have.

The smell of microwave popcorn is perhaps one of the most recognizable smells in the world. Maybe someone should do a study on it, are humans the only ones susceptible to popcorn cravings? Have we explored all the possibilities of popcorn? When will someone invent cornpops, wait we have??

Weddings: A Lot of Fun For Everyone!

A wedding is more than a bride and groom making a commitment to each other. It is a special day filled with special moments for all in attendance. An important day, such as your wedding, is meant to be documented, but how much should you spend to capture all the significant moments? In 2011, the average bride spent $2,299 on a photographer and $1,486 on a videographer according to The Knot’s annual survey. The survey also noted the first increase in overall average cost (excluding honeymoon) since 2007. With larger wedding budgets, have brides spent more on photographers and videographers?

The answer is no, the average spent on photographers decreased over the past five years while their wasn't much of a change in the cost of videographers. Many weddings incorporated additional entertainment into their reception, which may be the cause of the increased wedding cost. Brides now rent a photo booth or hire a comedian to make the wedding reception fun for everyone! It will be interesting to see if the added entertainment trend continues and if the average cost rises with it.

Have you been to a wedding reception that had a photo booth or comedian? Did you like having the extra entertainment?

Turkey Hunting Tips

(Meleagris gallopavo subsp. intermedia) Wild t...

Creating a good scatter on a group of fall turkeys can be tough. The birds often see or hear you coming before you can rush them. If you do sneak close, charging in for a proper scatter challenges even the most spry human legs and can be dangerous if you fall. And if the birds run off or fly away in the same direction, you now have a bunch of paranoid turkeys to deal with.
But there are other ways to hunt fall turkeys. These low-key but highly effective tactics rely on woodsmanship and calling. Yes, you can call in a fall turkey that hasn't been scattered. And if you don't get your bird today, it still be around tomorrow.

Scouting is Key
Scout during summer and early fall so you'll know where turkeys will roost, feed, dust, loaf, get Water and find grit. Walk woods and field edges looking for all manner of !turkey sign--droppings, dusting areas, feathers from a roost. Find a good vantage point and glass for birds on the move.

If you can't do any pre-season scouting, "power scout" when you arrive at your hunting grounds. Talk to landowners, school bus drivers, mail carriers, farmers and others who work the land and know it well, to learn when and where turkeys have been spotted. This cuts valuable hours off your search for birds.

HUNT THE ROOST-MORNING
If you know where turkeys like to roost or, better yet, if you actually saw them fly up, sneak in close before first light the next morning. Set up just like you would for a spring gobbler, only the intended target now will likely be a hen or young jake.

Don't fiddle with putting out decoys; you'll run the risk of spooking birds. Position yourself between the roost site and where the turkeys want to go for their morning feed. Call with soft, sleepy-sounding clucks and tree yelps. Once the birds start flying down, get aggressive with bossy yelps, urgent kee-kees and pleading kee-kee runs. Fall birds make a racket as they gather, primp, preen and confirm the day's pecking order, so you'll need to work hard to grab their attention.

MORNING SETUPS
If your roost setup doesn't pan out, quietly head for a feeding area--the corner of a harvested grain field (corn, soybeans and sorghum are prime), an alfalfa field with its greenery and bugs or an abandoned meadow. Or set up where you've seen turkeys traveling. Position yourself on a point of timber, along a fenceline, or in a funnel between woods, fields or hills.

Put out a couple of decoys, or even a little flock of four or five. Gregarious fall turkeys will check out any new comers to their territory, either to greet them or pick a fight. Make soft purrs and clucks, like feeding birds would. Belt out a few lonely yelps every once in a while to attract attention from any birds that might be passing by your setup at a distance. Try throwing a few kee-kees into the mix, too.

AFTERNOON SETUPS
Hunt in "hanging out" cover in the afternoon--mature timber where birds are likely to loaf away the midday hours. Make setups for an hour or more at strategic spots. Call with soft purrs and clucks. Sprinkle in a few yelps and kee-kees occasionally.

If the weather is unseasonably warm, go to an area with spring seeps or other dampness. Birds will come for water and greens. If the wind is howling, head for calm areas in hollows and on the lee side of hills. If you found a dusting area while scouting, set up there and wait for turkeys to come for their afternoon bath.

Drift-&-Yelp
Fall's answer to spring's cutt-and-run, the drift-and-yelp is essentially a still-hunt through good turkey grounds as you look for birds to set camp on. It is crucial to move slowly and quietly when setting up your spot, which is hard to do in a quiet woods setting. Stop often, keeping your back against a tree for safety. Call with pleading lost yelps and lonely kee-kees.

Sooner or later, a turkey will answer. Since you're already against a tree, drop down and set up immediately. Forget about decoys--the real turkeys are either close or on their way. Mimic what the bird says to you.

Hunt The Roost-Evening
Ease close to a known roost area a few hours before sunset. Set up quietly with a couple of decoys and wait. Sit ahead of the expected roost trees by 50 to 75 yards, so you can shoot incoming turkeys where there's still good light.

Call softly, and use only a few contented purrs and clucks. In the quiet of evening, these soft mumbles and whines say plenty.

Fake a Fight
Wild turkeys jostle and tussle for pecking order all year, but the skirmishing increases in fall. Like schoolkids, turkeys love a good fight and will come running to watch or join in on the action.

Set up where birds might be within earshot and go to town with loud, aggressive fighting purrs and cackles from both a diaphragm and a slate or push-pin call at once. You'll sound like two birds in an all-out turkey fight. Scuffle leaves with your boots to add to the effect.

After a minute or so, put down the hand-operated call, pick up your shotgun and get ready. Continue calling with your mouth for another minute before going silent for a few more. Repeat the fight sequence every five minutes or so for an hour.

Try a Flanking Maneuver
Take the hunt to the turkeys. Get to a strategic vantage point, spot some birds and determine their travel route. Using terrain and vegetation as cover, sneak ahead of the flock and set up. There's no time for decoys now.

Make some forlorn yelps and excited kee-kees, but mostly use purrs and clucks. Wait at least an hour for pokey birds who may have veered off or found something good to eat on the way.
